Icebreaker Reception

IcebreakerReception_sponsorsThis event (traditional for geophysical conferences with Technical Exhibition) will be on Monday evening, 3rd October at the venue (Hotel Mercure Buda). This is the typical opportunity to meet your colleagues, while you can walk along the (partially set) poster rows and look around the Technical Exhibition in an informal way.
The reception, starting at 19:00 and finishing around 21:00, is open for all registered participants of the congress. Catering is sponsored by Geotomographie and GES Ltd.

Conference Evening

a_mbfh_small    Are you going to see the Congress symbol, the Chain Bridge from the Danube? The gala dinner (traditional as well for conferences) will make this experience on Tuesday evening. When the “Budapest” pleasure boat cruises up and down, and when you have a light supper, you may admire the Budapest riverside landscape from the river (a World Heritage Site itself).
Starting at 19:00 from the landing stage at the Batthyány square (near to a metro station), the MS Budapest (a double deck ship) cruises first north, to the Margaret Bridge and then south to the Lágymányosi Bridge, where she turns back to be moored at the Vigadó square Landing Stage. End of the event is around 22:00.
The co-host of the Conference Evening is the Hungarian Office of Mining and Geology (MBFH – Magyar Bányászati és Földtani Hivatal).
a_geologOn the deck of the ship, living piano music will be served by the courtesy of Geo-Log Ltd. Full delegates and first exhibitors will get their vouchers for the conference evening at the reception desk,  while junior delegates and family members (they all are invited) can purchase this voucher at the “On-site Payments” desk on Monday, 3rd October.

A visit to the Eötvös Memorial Collection

elgilogo_170x100pxOn Wednesday evening, a visit is planned to the Eötvös Memorial Collection (ELGI, Eötvös Loránd Geophysical Institute of Hungary, Columbus u. 17-23), to see the memorabilities of the great Hungarian scientist, Loránd Eötvös, the row of the famous torsion balances, and the collection of the old geophysical instruments.

As a free of charge event, you can register yourself at the reception desk on Monday and Tuesday. The visit starts at 19:00 (ending: around 21:00). To get to the Collection, you need to use public transport lines (a leaflet giving details how you can get there will be found at the Information Desk).

Awarding the best junior authors

ENeRG_smallAn important and integral part of the role of an international event such as BGS2011 is to recognize and honour the efforts of the participants. To do so, the ENeRG and the BGS Organising Committee offers awards for the best presentation of a young geoscientist author (one for oral, one for poster presentations).
Proposals for the awards will be made by the chairpersons of the sessions; final resolution will be made by the BGS Steering Committee. Awards ceremony is at 16:30, Wednesday, together with the congress closing ceremony.

Geo.Quiz: a challenge for students and juniors

energ_elgiA Geo.Quiz will be organised for university students, PhD students and for young geo-scientists (below the age of 30). Competing to outwit each other, teams of maximum 3 participants should be formed. The quiz will take place on Tuesday afternoon, 4th October, after the last presentation (17:00), in the ground floor poster area (Mátyás II Room). There will be simple questions on the Balkan Geophysical Society, on the seismic and non-seismic geophysics, and on the related sciences (geology, geography, geodesy, etc).
The best three teams win English books containing fundamental publications by Loránd Eötvös, and special dedicated folk art pottery souvenirs. In addition, every participant receives a photo album on Budapest. All prizes will be given by courtesy of ENeRG, while the Eötvös books were donated by the Eötvös Loránd Geophysical Institute.
The prize-giving event will be organised together with the closing ceremony (16:30, Wednesday, 5th October, Mátyás I Room, ground floor).
If you feel young (and aged less than 30), organise a team first. Application can be made at the Information Desk, not later than 18:00 on Monday, 3rd October. Rules of the quiz will be found there, participation – of course – is free of charge.

Additional programmes

We, Hungarian geophysicists are keen to show you this city, Budapest, a busy town as well as the one containing World Heritage sites. For your free time and for your spouse's sake, several sightseeing programmes are offered by the hotels reception desk. A short list of proposed programmes: walk in the Castle District (half day), and around the mediaeval monuments of old Buda (e. g. Gülbaba Türbesi).
At the beginning, a one-day excursion has been planned to see the beauty spots nearby Budapest: Esztergom, the Danube bend, and Szentendre on 6th October. Having not enough preliminary registrations until now, this event is unsettled at the time when we send this programme to the printing office. Offering our sincere apologies, please, ask the Information Desk on the final decision, depending on the numbers of on-site registrations.
